The year: 1984, a time when car travel for children meant a very limited choice of unsafe options. Options such as unrestrained carrycots for babies and chairs simply hung over the back seat for toddlers. However, 1984 was also the year that saw the introduction of Europe’s very first infant car seat. It was introduced by Maxi-Cosi and it was quite simply a revolution.
Brought to Europe by a small Dutch company
The concept of this infant car seat originated in the US, and was brought to Europe by a Dutch entrepreneur called Sjef van der Linden. Sjef ran a successful retail nursery store in Helmond, Holland where the Dutch head office of Maxi-Cosi is still located. The moment he saw the concept, he knew it was perfect, and the first Maxi-Cosi car seat was born.
Unique rearward-facing installation
The first Maxi-Cosi was developed for newborns to babies up to 9 months of age – and it was highly unusual for Europeans. Firstly, the rearward-facing installation was unique. But so too was its location: the front seat of the car. A seat that had, until then, been considered the most dangerous. After all, this was the early 80s, the age before airbags, seat belt legislation, and other car safety enhancing features. Nevertheless, public opinion – as well as European safety regulations and traffic laws - were soon changed and the innovative Maxi-Cosi child car seat started its journey of redefining child mobility.
First steps outside the car
Maxi-Cosi continued to set the standard for in-car child travel solutions. It built on its experience and researched what children and parents needed to enjoy their time together worry-free. And soon it was time to use this expertise outside the car, and so the Maxi-Taxi was developed: the first stroller frame that enabled the Maxi-Cosi infant car seat to be used as a basic buggy. Basic and functional at first, the Maxi-Taxi soon evolved from a practical accessory to a complete buggy.
First ever 3-in-1 travel system
With the introduction of a matching pram body, Maxi-Cosi was first to launch the the 3-in-1 car seat travel system. A system that is still highly popular today. In 2007, Maxi-Cosi also introduced the award-winning Mura, its first complete pram/pushchair. Today, the new Maxi-Cosi Mura Plus is loaded with options to offer everything active young parents need to enjoy plenty of fun quality-time with their child, as well as cope with their daily routine.
Among today’s other top favourites is the Maxi-Cosi Pebble baby car seat, which features an 'easy out' harness that stays open to enable parents to easily place their baby in and out of the seat. The Pebble uses the sane FamilyFix base as the Maxi-Cosi Pearl car seat, which means you can use the have Isofix safety and ease of use for up to 3½ years.
Another of today’s big favourites is that Maxi-Cosi CabrioFix baby car seat, which simply transfers from the car onto any pushchair or buggy by Maxi-Cosi. This means that when baby falls asleep during a car journey, he/she need not be disturbed and can continue to dream away sweetly.
Good, better, best: Isofix Car Seat Family
The 25th anniversary of the first Maxi-Cosi baby car seat in 2009 coincided with the launch of the brand’s next step into the future of in-car safety: the Maxi-Cosi Car Seat Family. Offering Isofix safety from birth to well over 3 years of age, it consists of two car seats, the Pebble (0-13 kg) and Pearl (9-18 kg), and the FamilyFix Isofix base, which can be used for both seats. State-of-the-art safety features, such as audio and visual alerts to warn parents of unsafe installation, made the Pebble, Pearl and FamilyFix the most advanced child safety restraints available. Then 2011 saw the introduction of the latest addition to the Maxi-Cosi range of car seats: Rodifix. With this car seat for children from 3 to 12 years of age, Maxi-Cosi is now able to offer an Isofix solution across all car seats categories.
Almost 1½ million per year
With an unparalleled production of 1.4 million car seats per year sold in over 70 countries, Maxi-Cosi has become an established household name worldwide.
This is, in a nutshell, the story of Maxi-Cosi a Dutch brand that started small and took the world by storm.
