How to install an
Isofix car seat?

Installing an Isofix car seat

By choosing Isofix you have chosen one of the safest and easiest ways to keep your child safe during car journeys. Maxi-Cosi has a full range of Isofix car seats for all ages.

Before you buy

Firstly, make sure your car has Isofix fittings. The best way of doing this is to check your manual. Most relatively new cars will have them. Remember that the location of Isofix fittings varies between cars, and they are sometimes concealed.

You will need to find:

  • Two metal fixing points between the seat and the backrest
  • A third fixing point for the top tether strap, if provided in your car.
*Top Tip*
Make sure the car seat you are planning to buy can be properly installed in your make of car. It’s easy to do this by checking the Maxi-Cosi car fitting list. For example, in some cars you will not be able to instal a support leg or top tether.

Car seats for children over the age of 3½ do not have support legs or top tethers.

Installing your Isofix car seat

It’s crucial to instal your car seat properly. Follow these steps:

  1. Pull out the Isofix connectors on the car seat base. These are often yellow.
  2. Place the car seat on the rear seat.
  3. Push the car seat firmly against the back rest to lock it into the Isofix fittings. You will hear a definite click when this has been done properly.
*Top Tip*
4. Check the indicator light to confirm your car seat is correctly installed.

In some cars, the car seat may be installed in the front passenger seat. Check your car manual or the Maxi-Cosi car fitting list.

Installing a support leg

Some car seats have a support leg. These are designed to prevent the car seat from moving forward in a crash.

*Top Tip*
A support leg needs to be attached to sturdy flooring and so should never be used where the vehicle has underfloor storage.

If your car seat has a support leg, you will find it at the front of the seat or on the base.

Follow these steps:

  1. Adjust the leg to the right height.
  2. Make sure the leg is stable against the floor and lock it firmly into position.
  3. Make sure your car seat is properly installed using the Isofix fittings – check the indicator light to make sure.

Installing a top tether

Like the support leg, a top tether will help to prevent your child’s car seat moving forward in a crash. To instal the tether, your car will need a third Isofix fitting. This is usually located in the boot of the car behind the rear seat. Check your car manual to make sure. You may find a top tether logo marking the position of the fitting in your car.

Follow these steps:

  1. Clip the yellow hook of the top tether onto the third Isofix fitting.
  2. Firmly tighten the tether.
  3. Check the indicator light to make sure the tension is correct.
*Top Tip*
Make sure you also check the indicator light on the car seat to confirm it is properly connected to the other two Isofix fittings.
