Child car seat laws

Rules that make travel safer

More and more countries are helping make travel safer for children by adopting car seat regulations.

Car seat laws and guidelines vary from country to country and in the United States, from state to state. But there are also international child car seat standards.

The World Health Organization reports on car seat safety and the implementation of car seat regulations.

UN-ECE regulation 44/04
This international standard, also known as R44, is valid in over 100 countries. It categorises child car seats into 4 groups:

  • Group 0+
  • Group 1
  • Group 2
  • Group 3

 i-Size (ECE – R129)
This new, improved EU child safety seat regulation came into effect in July 2013. These regulations apply to all types of child car seats used in any type of car, including baby and toddler seats, combinations, convertible car seats and child booster seats. There may be differences in rules applying to belted and ISOFIX seats. Car seats need an additional certificate if you want to use them on a plane.

Buying a car seat: how do you know it’s safe?
Car seats are usually approved according to the law that’s valid in the country of purchase. Approval is completed by independent authorities and confirmed with an official label.

All car seats that pass the approval process are safe, but there are different levels of safety. The safest and best car seats are rated by independent organisations. And at Bébé Confort, we also give our seats safety and best in class ratings to guide you.
