Introducing Europe’s first baby car seat
In a time when car travel for children was limited to unsafe options like unrestrained carrycots and seats for toddlers that were simply hung over the back seat, the 1984 introduction of Europe’s very first infant car seat MAXI-COSI was nothing short of a revolution.
From Dyn-O-Mite to Maxi-Cosi
Originating from the US, the concept of this infant car seat, then called Dyn-O-Mite, was brought to Europe two years earlier by the late Sjef van der Linden, who established the company of Maxi Miliaan (Dorel since 1994). His keen sense of innovation already led him to run a successful retail nursery store and importing business of nursery products in Helmond near Eindhoven, Holland, where the Dutch headoffice of Maxi-Cosi is still located.
Specially developed for newborns up to 9 months of age,
the Maxi-Cosi seat design was unusual for European parents.
Also unique was the rearward facing installation: in the front
of the car! Considered dangerous in accidents, the passenger seat
was off limits to children until then. After all, this is the early 80’s,
the age before the airbag, before seat belt laws and other
safety enhancing features in cars.
Groundbreaking in its purpose, design and age group, European safety regulations had to be set up and traffic laws modified to accommodate the innovative character of the Maxi-Cosi, Europe’s first infant car seat.
Taking safety outside the car
Maxi-Cosi continued to set the standard for child travel solutions. Building on decades of experience and research into what children and their parents needed to enjoy
their time together without any worries, Maxi-Cosi took its expertise outside the car.
The Maxi-Taxi was the first stroller frame that enabled the Maxi-Cosi infant car seat
to be used outside the car as a basic buggy. Basic and functional at first, the Maxi-Taxi
soon evolved from a practical accessory to a complete buggy.
With the later introduction of a matching pram body, Maxi-Cosi was the first to launch
the concept of the 3-in-1 car seat travel system that is popular today.
In 2007, Maxi-Cosi introduced the award-winning MURA, its first complete pram/pushchair. Loaded with options, the Maxi-Cosi Mura offers everything active young parents need to enjoy plenty of fun quality time with their child, as well as cope with their daily routine.
Good, better, best: Isofix Car Seat Family
The 25th anniversary of the Maxi-Cosi baby car seat in 2009 coincided with the launch of the brand’s next step into
the future of in-car safety: the Maxi-Cosi Car Seat Family. Offering Isofix safety from birth to well over 3 years of age,
it consists of two car seats, the Maxi-Cosi Pebble (0-13 kg) and Pearl (9-18 kg), and FamilyFix, an Isofix base
which can be used for both seats.
State of the art safety features, such as a lights-and-sound LED display to warn parents of unsafe installation,
make the Pebble, Pearl and FamilyFix the most advanced child safety restraints today. 2011 Saw the introduction
of the latest addition to the Maxi-Cosi range of car seats: FeroFix. With this car seat for children from 3 to 12 years
of age, Maxi-Cosi now is able to offer an Isofix solution across all age categories.
With an unparalleled production of 1.4 million car seats per year sold to over 70 countries,
Maxi-Cosi has become an established household name worldwide.
