When travelling by plane, most airlines allow parents to hold small children in their laps.
During take-off, landing and turbulence, the cabin crew provides a special seat belt that is used to attach the child to the parent’s seat belt.
But it is far more comfortable and safer to have your tiny passenger ‘fly’ in his or her own familiar Maxi-Cosi infant car seat. After all, it is perfectly adapted to the specific characteristics of a child’s body. The only drawback is that you need to reserve a separate seat for them.
The Maxi-Cosi Pebble is one of the few infant car seats on the market that is approved by the TÜV for airline use. Unlike almost every other car seat, the Maxi-Cosi Pebble can be secured in an airline seat using a 2-point seat belt. However, as with installation in a car, the Maxi-Cosi Pebble must be placed in a rear-facing position, i.e. against the direction of travel.
In spite of TÜV approval, not all airlines are sufficiently familiar with this type of use. We therefore recommend contacting the airline about this when making a booking or prior to departure. Airlines that allow this type of travel in accordance with the TÜV standard include:
- Air Berlin
- Condor Flugdienst GmbH
- Condor Berlin GmbH
- Hapag Lloyd
- Hapag Lloyd Express (HLX)
- LTU Lufttransport-Unternehmen
Apart from the Maxi-Cosi Pebble, the Maxi-Cosi Citi (SPS) has also been approved for airline use since January 2005. This approval can be recognised by a special sticker under the shell. The user manual for the Maxi-Cosi infant car seat contains detailed information on installing the seat in an airplane.
