i-Size the new EU car seat legislation is here

i-Size, the new EU child car seat legislation has arrived. Developed for car seats used by children from birth to 105 cm, this new legislation will improve protection and safety for children while travelling in a number of ways.

One of the most significant changes that i-Size will bring about is increasing the minimum period for a child to travel  rearward facing to 15 months in an i-Size car seat. This will significantly reduce injuries to the head and neck of children involved in a frontal collision . It will also help reduce the number of babies being moved to a forward-facing car seat too early by providing parents with a clear length classification for when their child is ready to be moved up into the next stage seat rather than the current, confusing weight classification system that allows babies being moved to a forward-facing seat as early as nine months.

The new legislation also introduces a minimum safety performance criteria for side-impact collisions, which is currently not necessary for a child car seat to be legally sold.

All i-Size car seats will fit perfectly in cars with i-Size seating positions and will help dramatically reduce the risk of incorrect installation by promoting the simpler click-and-go ISOFix system.

i-Size does not replace the current ECE R44/04 regulation, but will run alongside this legislation for the forseeable future. All current car seats remain safe to use, i-Size just gives parents an extra option when buying a car seat for their baby.
